About UsDespite the multitude of Muslims working in the City, until CityMuslims there was no single, representative body to serve the various needs of Muslim professionals in a coordinated and effective manner. CityMuslims has been formed with the aim of filling that vacuum by catering for the myriad of interests and requirements that exist among Muslims in the City. We aspire to be the premier organisation in the City of London, established to serve the needs and promote the interests of Muslim professionals working in the City of London. These interests range from the desire to be able to network with like minded individuals through to engaging in lively and productive discussion about issues that affect local and global communities. Our ethos is to be a one stop shop for their concerns and to undertake our activity representing Islam & Muslims in a positive and confident manner. To achieve that objective we encourage our brothers and sisters to engage with us and actively participate wherever and whenever possible. CityMuslims seeks to serve everyone who works in the City, (‘The Square Mile’ and beyond), and who identifies themselves as a Muslim irrespective of their race, gender or school of thought... CityMuslims is yours. We value your input and involvement. The growth and success of CityMuslims is limited only by your imagination. Our aims are to
A networking circle for Muslims in the City - Is there such need?We firmly believe there is an acute need for Muslims to have their concerns represented effectively and in a meaningful manner. CityMuslims aims to fill the current void by working to provide practical solutions to issues Muslim professionals encounter on a regular basis. In addition to this, we seek to cater for the wide range of interests to be found in the diverse and growing Muslim community that exists in the heart of London. What do you hope to achieve through City Muslims?Regardless of whether Muslim professionals find themselves seeking networking opportunities to help propel their career, wandering about the nearest place to offer prayers, trying to find like minded individuals to socialise with or attempting to understand their rights under the law, our vision is for CityMuslims to be their first port of call. We really do aspire to be a 'one stop shop' serving Muslim professionals in the City. If we can go some way towards achieving this - and we are confident that over time, inshallah, this will happen - then CityMuslims will have accomplished something that we feel will be of tremendous benefit and value. Who are the Muslims working in the City? (age, ethnicity, profession, etc)It's very difficult to quantify the backgrounds of Muslim professionals in the City. Essentially, the data required to be able to answer such a question accurately is not easily available. From a cursory perspective, there are many brothers and sisters working in a host of different industry sectors such as the medical profession, investment banking, consultancy, and so on. Muslims are represented across the full range of what may be described as the 'traditional' City disciplines. Each year there are new Muslim graduates entering the City to take up work - but by no means does this mean that the vast majority are young. In fact there is a healthy balance, with a significant number of more mature and experienced Muslims. Naturally, CityMuslims is not aimed at a particular segment of this community, but rather the ethos is to be accommodating of all backgrounds. How is the Muslim community integrated in the City system? For ex, most City professionals do a lot of networking and go to bars and pubs after the hours. How do Muslims fit into that?We would say that it's precisely because Muslim professionals find it so difficult to network and socialise in the same manner as their non-Muslim colleagues, that there is such a demand with regards to an alternative. In some respects, it is true to say that spending time in bars and clubs after hours is seen as part of the City culture. Many professionals consider such activity as more than simply unwinding and relaxing - rather it is seen in the context of building relationships that, from one angle, are fundamental to progressing personal careers or developing business. Of course, as we all know, Muslims cannot frequent places where there is alcohol without compromising their values and principles. CityMuslims recognises the need for there to be a way for Muslim professionals to interact in a wholly Islamic atmosphere. We understand that given the above scenario, and with the many competing demands and pressures that brothers and sisters face, it is difficult for them to find the time and commit the necessary resource towards networking effectively. This is where our objective is to be able to facilitate things, and make it as easy and efficient as possible, on their behalf. How does City Muslims plan to label itself? Traditional? Progressive? And what kind of Muslims are you looking to join your club?We are open for all Muslims to join us, irrespective of their background, gender, race or Islamic orientation. I am not sure that labels such as 'traditional' or 'progressive' really apply to what we are doing - we certainly don't view ourselves in light of labels, especially when there seems to be no fixed definition of such terms! What about other Muslim organisations working in the city? For many years now there have been a variety of organisations in London, each with its own remit and scope. Due to their efforts and determination there has been significant progress and headway made in addressing some of the issues faced by Muslims. This is something that should be acknowledged by all of us and commended accordingly. Our focus is specifically geared towards Muslim professionals in the City of London, which as far as we are aware is unique, but we appreciate fully that a legitimate concern is to ensure that the efforts of various organisations are not duplicated. Naturally, it is inevitable that in addressing some issues we will be touching upon areas that other organisations may already have had some input into. However, where there is an overlap, we will be seeking to work together in tandem, so that Muslim professionals can have their issues and interests catered for in the most effective and efficient manner. Is CityMuslims open to Women?CityMuslims is equally open to both men as well as women from the Muslim community. CityMuslim Sisters exists in order to cater for the specific concerns of Muslim women working in the City. The Muslim female population has steadily grown in the City, and CityMuslims is pleased to introduce this special section to the forum catering specifically for the needs of Muslim Sisters working in the City. Based on feedback and research carried out, CityMuslims will be posting a number of initiatives that Sisters have suggested to facilitate Muslim women’s involvement. Further updates will be posted onto our web site. In the pipeline some of the activities specifically for Muslim women include:
CityMuslims also welcomes female volunteers who work in the City and would like to become active advocates and a voice for other Muslim professionals. Further details can be requested from the web site, or by writing to the address listed at the bottom of the information pack. Are there any fees for joining CityMuslims? At present there are no joining fees for CityMuslim members, however CityMuslim may at times request nominal proceeds to subsidise some of its activities at cost. Is CityMuslims just about Muslims?Although, due to the nature of its primary aims, CityMuslims has a predominant focus towards Muslims, it nevertheless actively encourages participation from people of all backgrounds, regardless of their race or religion. |
